Keiveon Hunt (Jr., Class of 2022) is a 5-11 point guard from Callaway High School in Jackson, Mississippi.
Hunt has been the starting point guard for Callaway since midseason of his freshman year teaming up with Ole Miss signee and Class of 2021 nationally top 50 ranked, Daeshun Ruffin, to form a dynamic backcourt combination that led Callaway to a 5A state championship last year.
While Ruffin has often captured the headlines for the Chargers, Hunt has been a key component and just as vital to the Chargers’ success over these three years. Hunt has been the Chargers’ second leading scorer and leading assist man during each of his three years in the program and has seen his numbers steadily increase each year, growing from 10.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assist & 2.3 steals his freshman year, to 13.9, 4.2, 4.6 & 2.3 his sophomore year, to career highs of 16.6, 6.0, 7.4 & 2.4 during the present season.
Hunt has a solid build and has exceptional strength and quickness for the point guard position. Since his freshman year he has really grown as a floor leader and his proficiency at running a team has improved every year, as can be seen in his expanding assist numbers. Offensively he shows the ability to be a high level scorer who excels at using his quickness to drive past defenders and get to the rim for scores. His solid build allows him to absorb contact and still deliver the goods on his forays into the paint and when the lane closes he does an exceptional job of finding his open teammates. His jumper which in past years would have been best described as streaky has shown an increased consistency this year and provides another element that opponents must account for and that will serve him well as he moves to the next level.
Along with his talents and numbers, prospective recruiters should know that Hunt is also battle tested. This season Hunt and the Chargers have been hampered by the pandemic as they have only played 7 games to this point, but during Hunt’s first two years in the program the Chargers played formidable schedules as Callaway traveled all over the Southeast playing in numerous showcase events facing off against some of the top teams and players in the country and Hunt was a key component to Callaway’s success in that arena.
Currently ranked the #6 player in the Mississippi Hoop Report Class of 2022 rankings, Hunt projects as a strong Mid-Major level prospect and his recruitment is still taking shape. Possessing a 3.8 GPA and a member of the National Honor Society, he is receiving strong early interest from Southern Mississippi, Jackson State and Alabama State, while Ole Miss has checked in.
